Spain's Dani Olmo Calls Out Argentina's Ayala After World Cup Final Fight, Says Coach is 'Lying'

Timothy RappJul 26, 2026

Dani Olmo denied Argentina assistant Roberto Ayala's claim that the Spanish midfielder said something to him before Ayala punched him in the throat following Spain's 1-0 win in the World Cup final.

"Someone who says they're sorry but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to a comment is surely not sorry because he is lying. I didn't say anything to him, so he doesn't need to apologize," Olmo told Catalan newspaper Diari de Terrassa (h/t ESPN's Jamie Barton). "What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to acknowledge it with humility, honesty and dignity. ... When my children, my family and all those fans watch the game, I want them to be proud of how we competed, how we won and, above all, of our behavior, because the importance of football means that us players are an example for children and the new generations, and that brings with it a huge responsibility."

Ayala apologized during an interview with Valencia Capital Radio but claimed he was reacting to something Olmo said.

"Of course I'm sorry. Given my position, I cannot allow a feeling, or whatever I might receive from the other party, to affect my mood or my actions," he said. "For me, we need to draw a line and leave it at that. It was more of a shove than anything else, it wasn't a punch as they're making it out to be. It was a reaction to something he said, but that's it. If I see him, I'll obviously apologize to him in person."

Several Argentina players were confrontational and physical following a hard-fought Spain win in extra time. Leandro Paredes pushed Eric García in the throat and pulled Gavi to the ground, while Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada were also involved in confrontations.

And midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off just before the conclusion of regulation for a second yellow after a bad tackle on Pau Cubarsí, leaving Argentina a man down for the entirety of extra time.

Olmo, 28, finished the 2026 World Cup with no goals but two assists, operating as one of the creative fulcrums in Spain's attack.
