Spain is once again the World Cup champion.

La Roja held off Lionel Messi and Argentina 1-0 in extra time on Sunday to win its first World Cup since 2010 and its second ever. Ferran Torres delivered the game-winning goal in the 106th minute for Spain.

While Spain will spend the next four years as champions, it's fair to say that the fans were the real winners in one of the more memorable World Cup Finals in recent memory.

There were also fascinating storylines, an epic halftime performance at MetLife Stadium and, of course, plenty of memes on social media.

The story for Spain was its defense, which prevented Argentina from getting any shots on goal. It marked La Roja's seventh shutout of the World Cup.

While Messi hasn't yet announced whether he'll retire from World Cup play, it's fair to assume that the 39-year-old won't return for the 2030 World Cup. If it was his last tournament, he went out strong, even if he couldn't close it out with a win for his country.
