Lionel Messi Celebrates in Videos, Photos After Argentina's Late World Cup Rally vs. England
Argentina engineered a stunning comeback over England in the FIFA World Cup semifinal on Wednesday, overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the final minutes for a 2-1 victory.
Understandably, Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi was emotional following the remarkable victory.
Messi assisted on both of Argentina's goals in the 85th minute (to Enzo Fernández) and two minutes into stoppage time (Lautaro Martínez).
Argentina has ridden an emotional roller coaster in the knockout round to say the least.
They withstood a tremendous effort from Cabo Verde in the Round of 32 before winning 3-2 in extra time.
Argentina then defeated Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 after being down 2-0 in the 79th minute, scoring three goals in 14 minutes.
The defending World Cup champions then took down Switzerland 3-1 in the quarterfinals thanks to two goals in the second half of extra time.
Now Argentina has struck again with late-match magic. They have now scored 12 goals (including one own goal) from the 75th minute onward over seven 2026 World Cup matches.
As for Messi, he only added to his resume in the GOAT debate with two more assists. He now leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals (alongside France's Kylian Mbappé) but holds the assists tiebreaker (four to Mbappé's three).
Argentina will now play Spain on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the World Cup final.
