ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wembanyama opted to take the 25 percent max rather than the 30 percent supermax with escalators that could have pushed the total value of his deal up to $303 million.
By not taking the supermax, Wembanyama has given the Spurs some cap flexibility in the future to retain their young core with Stephon Castle eligible to extend off his rookie deal after next season.
Dylan Harper will presumably follow with a new deal in the summer of 2028 if he stays on his current trajectory after a promising rookie year.
The Spurs had a breakout season in 2025-26, winning 62 games in the regular season and reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.
Wembanyama finished third in MVP voting, won Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-NBA first team.
