Christian Pulisic Reflects on USMNT's World Cup Exit in IG Photo, 'It Simply Wasn't Good Enough'

The United States men's national team is just two days removed from its round of 16 loss to Belgium in the 2026 World Cup, but Christian Pulisic believes it is "just the start for us" as he and the club look ahead to the future.

"Tough to find the words," he wrote Wednesday on Instagram. "I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who believed. The support carried us all the way through. It simply wasn't good enough from us in the end and I wanted to deliver so much more. I still feel blessed to be a part of this team. The memories this summer will last a lifetime. It's just the start for us and for this sport in America."

While the Americans impressed at times during the group stage and the round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the matchup with Belgium was their biggest test in the World Cup.

And they failed.

Belgium cruised to a 4-1 victory while taking full advantage of poor defense from the Red, White and Blue. Pulisic is the face of the United States team, but he struggled mightily as well before he exited with an apparent injury.

According to ESPN FC, nobody on the field lost possession more in the first half than his 11 times. It was an opportunity for him to elevate his game on the sport's biggest stage, but he did not take advantage.

Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere did elevate his game with a brace, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku each added insurance goals in the second half.

Malik Tillman's first-half free kick for a goal was the only bright spot for an American program that is now facing far more questions than answers after failing to advance past the round of 16 in the World Cup they co-hosted.

At 27 years old, Pulisic figures to remain a key part of the team for the next four years as it looks toward the 2030 World Cup. The United States will be under plenty of pressure to bounce back from Monday's loss, but Pulisic believes there is reason for optimism for the team and soccer in the country.
