For Messi, the comeback was perhaps of particular relief after he missed a first-half penalty. For a man who has shouldered such a burden for the Argentine national team, going out in that manner surely would have weighed on him.
Instead he helped fuel a comeback for the ages, and his relief and passion after the game was on full display:
Messi is now the leading scorer at this year's tournament (eight goals) and the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup (21). It's easy to forget he's 39 and the most prolific years of his career are behind him.
He's still just that good. Argentina have now had two incredibly close calls in the knockout phase and it's fair to question if perhaps their magic will run out as the competition stiffens even further.
But for now, we just have to enjoy Messi and his teammates finding a way, time and time again. The defending champions won't be bowing out without a fight.
