The disallowed goal came after midfielder Marwan Attia fouled Lisandro Martinez deep in Egypt's half, allowing for a change in possession. The Egyptians then broke on the counter, scoring on Mostafa Zico's strike.
That gave Egypt a 2-0 lead before it was overturned. It was a controversial decision, as you might imagine, as was the officiating in general:
"A foul in the attacking phase of play, which leads to a goal or possession by the team that [scores] a goal can result in the goal being disallowed and being given a free kick," Fox Sports soccer officiating expert Dr. Joe Machnik noted.
While Egypt eventually restored their 2-0 lead, a late and furious Argentina comeback saw the holders escape with a 3-2 victory.
