Lionel Messi Visibly Emotional in Videos, Photos After Argentina's Epic World Cup Rally vs. Egypt
Lionel Messi and Argentina put together a thrilling comeback in the Round of 16 against Egypt on Tuesday, scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes to rally from a 2-0 deficit.
After the win, the emotions immediately came flooding in for Messi, who scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
Argentina trailed 2-0 with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation, and it looked like Egypt was going to end what could be Messi's final World Cup in the Round of 16.
But Christian Romero got things going for Argentina, scoring a header off an assist from Messi in the 79th minute to give his side some new life.
Just moments later, in the 83rd minute, Messi scored from the center of the box off an assist from Gonzalo Montiel to tie things up at 2-2.
Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Enzo Fernández scored the go-ahead goal, one that Egypt was never able to respond to.
It's hard to imagine the range of emotions Messi and Argentina felt over the final 20 minutes of Tuesday's match. It looked as if Egypt was going to run away with it and eliminate the defending champions, but a magical run saved Argentina's run.
Now, what could be Messi's final World Cup will continue as he looks to go out on top.
Though he's 39 years old, Messi has arguably been the best player in this year's World Cup. He currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with eight goals, one ahead of France's Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.
Argentina now awaits the winner of Switzerland and Colombia, who play later on Tuesday. A win in the quarterfinal would put Argentina one step closer to winning back-to-back World Cups, something only two other teams have done before.
