Tom Brady Compares Argentina's Stunning World Cup Rally vs. Egypt to Patriots' Super Bowl Comeback
Egypt had a full Atlanta Falcons-style meltdown in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, all the way down to blowing a seemingly insurmountable lead late in the second half of a 3-2 loss against Argentina in the Round of 16.
Tom Brady, who was on the winning side of arguably the most famous Super Bowl collapse against the Falcons, said after the White and Sky Blue scored three unanswered goals in the span of 13 minutes that the Patriots' comeback might have been topped on Tuesday.
The parallels between the Falcons and Egypt are too close for comfort if you are a fan of the Pharaohs.
Both teams use red and white as their primary colors. Tuesday's game was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Falcons.
Egypt took a 2-0 lead on Mostafa Zico's goal in the 67th minute. There was a controversial moment nearly 10 minutes earlier when the Zico appeared to put the Egyptians up by two, but a VAR review from earlier in the sequence determined they committed a penalty and took the goal off the board.
After Argentina's offense spent most of the match struggling to get anything past Egypt goalie Mostafa Shoubir, a breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute thanks to Cristian Romero.
Lionel Messi scored the equalizer four minutes later, followed by Enzo Fernández's game-winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
Per ESPN.com, it marks the first time in World Cup history a team has come back to win a knockout match in regulation time after trailing by two goals in the 75th minute.
Brady and the New England Patriots couldn't even do that in Super Bowl 51. They needed overtime to pull off their 28-3 comeback win over the Falcons.
Despite the devastating loss, Egypt reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup for the first time since 1934.
Argentina, meanwhile, stays alive in its quest to become the first team to repeat as World Cup champions since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. The Argentinian team will take on the winner of Tuesday's Switzerland-Colombia match in the quarterfinals on July 11.
