USA v Belgium: Round of 16 - FIFA World Cup 2026

FIFA Claps Back at UEFA After Being Ripped for Folarin Balogun Red-Card Ban Decision

Paul KasabianJul 7, 2026

UEFA released a strong statement condemning FIFA for crossing a "red line" and making an "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision" to suspend USMNT star Folarin Balogun's red card, which allowed the striker to play in his team's 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 of the World Cup on Monday.

However, FIFA has now made its own remarks in response to UEFA's pointed comments.

"Reviewing the legal consequences of red cards in football is nothing new in the modern game. For instance, in the majority of top-tier leagues belonging to UEFA-affiliated member associations – the overturning of red cards is a common disciplinary measure, yet this has never raised concerns about crossing any 'red line.' And again, it should be emphasised that in the decision under scrutiny, the red card was not overturned. Suspending the effects of a red card based on an explicit provision of the applicable regulations is a much more balanced measure."

Trump on Balogun Red Card

Balogun was given a red card after stepping on the back of defender Tarik Muharemović's right heel during the United States' 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. As such, he was immediately ejected and suspended from the next match.

The act certainly appeared accidental and without any bad intent. However, he was still sent off for "serious foul play."

However, FIFA announced that the punishment from the red card would be suspended for a probationary period of one year.

The statement, which cited Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, read in part:

"Under Article 27 of the FDC, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has the discretion to suspend the implementation of any disciplinary measures so long as they do not relate to match manipulation—which, of course, did not occur here. It should be added that employment of art. 27 FDC is not unprecedented, as similar decisions have previously been issued during the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers."

That decision raised eyebrows. Per Dale Johnson of BBC Sport, 189 red cards have been given during the World Cup, but only two players have not served a suspension.

The first was Brazil's Garrincha in 1962, although Johnson made clear automatic bans weren't given back then. Rather, committees decided the players' fates after being provided evidence from officials.

The second was Balogun, and the decision was not received well, with UEFA and the Royal Belgian FA releasing statements amid a storm of controversy.

In the end, the United States is out after a difficult 4-1 loss.

Balogun, who scored three goals in three World Cup matches entering Monday and was arguably the USMNT's top player in this tournament, had three shots (one shot on target) but did not score as the United States' defense and goalkeeping struggled in defeat.
