Updated World Cup 2026 Bracket, Odds and Schedule After Monday's Round of 16 Results

Two more quarterfinal spots were up for grabs Monday at the 2026 men's World Cup as Portugal took on Spain and the United States faced Belgium.

Here is a look at all the action on the penultimate day of the round of 16.

Monday's Recaps

Belgium 4, United States 1

Belgium is heading to the quarterfinals after a dominant 4-1 victory over the United States that didn't even feel as close as the final score.

Charles De Ketelaere scored a brace, Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku added insurance, and the Belgian defense and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did enough to preserve the advantage.

There was no shortage of storylines and controversy entering Monday's game, especially after United States striker Folarin Balogun was deemed eligible to play. His red-card ban for the foul he committed against Bosnia and Herzegovina was suspended, which meant he could once again lead the American attack.

On the other side, Belgium surprised some by leaving headline players Kevin De Bruyne, Lukaku and Jérémy Doku on the bench to start the contest.

But the rotated lineup did nothing to prevent Belgium from dominating out of the gates on the way to a 2-1 lead that could have been even worse for the Americans were it not for multiple massive saves from goalkeeper Matt Freese.

De Ketelaere notched a brace before intermission with the first goal coming in the ninth minute on a wide open tap-in thanks to poor defending from Sergiño Dest. The second goal came on a header when he soared over an overmatched Tim Ream.

That second goal was a gut punch for the United States since it came approximately two minutes after Malik Tillman's equalizer on a free kick. It was yet another brilliant free kick from Tillman, who was a bright spot in the first half, and it deflected off the Belgium wall and into the back of the net.

It was one of the only promising early moments for the Red, White and Blue, and the game seemed too big for extended stretches. In fact, the 11 shots the host nation gave up in the first half were more than the combined total of the first-half shots allowed in their first four games.

And things went from bad to worse for the Americans in the second half when Freese misplayed a ball and Vanaken scored a goal that was downright embarrassing to concede to push the advantage to two.

Christian Pulisic also exited with an apparent injury in the second half after he lost possession 11 times in the first half, which was the most of any player on the field.

The face of the team playing so poorly was emblematic of the game as a whole, as Belgium was in full control. The Americans had some chances as time progressed with Sebastian Berhalter firing just wide and Thibaut Courtois turning away a Balogun opportunity.

But none of them connected as Belgium saw out the straightforward win with the Lukaku exclamation point.

Spain 1, Portugal 0

It took until stoppage time, but Spain finally figured out Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to advance to the quarterfinals.

Mikel Merino broke through the middle of the defense and found himself wide open before guiding the winning goal into the back of the net. It broke a defensive deadlock and ended Portugal's run in what was Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup.

Merino will get the headlines for the winner, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón and the defense were also brilliant to keep the opposition off the scoresheet.

In fact, it was the two goalkeepers and not Ronaldo or Lamine Yamal who controlled the first half and the majority of play.

Spain had more of the ball and created more chances in the early going, but Costa and the defense stood strong and kept the game scoreless into intermission. Simón was also tested with multiple shots on target from Ronaldo and another chance that deflected off the crossbar.

One of Ronaldo's shots seemed to be a perfectly placed flick of the ball destined for the back of the net, but Simón had other ideas with a diving stop.

Things then took a turn for the worse for Portugal early in the second half when Nuno Mendes exited with an injury. Considering he was a primary defender tasked with keep Yamal in check, the back end figured to be under fire the rest of the way with him sidelined.

Still, it was more of the same with the goalkeepers when Costa turned away Yamal's free kick before he punched away another effort off a Spain corner kick.

But it was just a matter of time before Spain broke through given all the pressure they continued to create, and Merino did just that with the winning goal.

Bernardo Silva nearly countered with his own goal and an equalizer right before the final whistle, but it wasn't meant to be for Portugal on Monday.
