England eliminated Mexico in the Round of 16 after a 3-2 loss on Sunday.

While England came out on top, Mexico led in most statistical categories. It controlled possession 67 percent to 33 percent, had as many shots on goal as England and had 2.02 expected goals to England's 1.55, per ESPN.

Ultimately, England capitalized on every opportunity, while Mexico came up short.

England took an early lead after Jude Bellingham scored in the 36th minute off an assist from Harry Kane. It took Bellingham just two minutes to record the brace and give England a 2-0 lead.

But Mexico stayed in it, cutting the lead to one goal when Julián Quiñones scored just before halftime.

Early in the second half, England's Jarell Quansah was shown a red card, meaning his side would have to manage with just 10 players through the rest of the match.

But England then got a favorable whistle on the other end when Kane was given a penalty kick, which he put away to make it a 3-1 game in the 60th minute.

The physical battle between the two teams continued after Kane's penalty kick, as Mexico was awarded a penalty kick of its own. Raúl Jiménez sunk the kick in the 69th minute to bring Mexico back within one.

Mexico had a few more opportunities down the stretch, but ultimately couldn't get the look at goal that it needed. Now, its World Cup run is over.

Meanwhile, England will take on Erling Haaland and a surging Norway team that beat Brazil on Sunday. Those two will face off on Saturday.
