"Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the kick-off of the World Cup 2026 round of 16 match between Mexico and England has been delayed to 7 p.m. local time (9 p.m. EDT)," FIFA said in a statement. "The safety and security of all individuals is FIFA's priority. We thank all fans for their understanding and cooperation."

Given the expectation of storms, FIFA had considered moving the start time of the contest to earlier in the day but ultimately kept the original start time. It's the third weather delay of this year's World Cup, following a two-hour delay for France vs. Iraq in the Group Stage and a one-hour delay Mexico vs. Ecuador in the Round of 16.

The weather conditions weren't the only talking point ahead of Mexico vs. England—the game's altitude (Estadio Azteca is approximately 7,350 feet above sea level) has also been a major adjustment for the visitors.

"The altitude will be, of course, a big disadvantage, because we cannot physically adapt to it in four days," manager Thomas Tuchel told reporters. "It's just impossible and more obstacles will maybe come. But we are ready for that, we need it maybe. We have the ideal platform now to genuinely believe that we are ready for that, and when the going gets tough, that we will find the answers."

Altitude, weather delays, hotel disruptions—England has undergone the full CONCACAF experience ahead of Sunday night's match. Whether that ultimately disrupts them on the pitch remains to be seen.
