Doric SamJul 5, 2026

Brazil's wait for a sixth FIFA World Cup title will continue for at least another four years.

Norway reached the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in team history and eliminated Brazil from this year's tournament in the Round of 16 with a 2-1 win behind a brace from star striker Erling Haaland. The 25-year-old now has seven goals in the World Cup, tying for first place in the race for the Golden Boot.

Norway gave Brazil an early scare when Patrick Berg found the back of the net in just the third minute, but the goal was called out for offside.

Brazil had the first of its many opportunities when it was awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box, but Norway keeper Ørjan Nyland came up with a big save on Bruno Guimarães' shot.

A loose ball in the box led to an opportunity for Brazil's Vini Jr., but Nyland was there once again to preserve the scoreless tie.

Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker matched Nyland with some major plays of his own, keeping things tied nil-nil in the first half.

The second half started quietly before Brazil subbed in Endrick, and he immediately had an opportunity for a breakaway after a turnover. Nyland came out of the net to challenge him, and his shot was off the mark because he kept it on the left foot.

Brazil opened up from its defensive shell and started putting the pressure on, but Norway didn't back down at all. Haaland struggled to convert initially, but he and his teammates waited patiently for the right opportunities.

Norway stayed on the attack, and Haaland headed in the go-ahead goal off a beautiful cross from Andreas Schjelderup.

Brazil nearly floated in a lucky goal to tie things up, but Nyland got his fingertips on the ball to hold onto the lead.

If Nyland's brick wall performance wasn't enough, Haaland put the game away with a strike from the top of the box to give Norway a 2-0 lead.

Brazil was awarded a late penalty, and veteran star Neymar Jr. converted for what might be his final World Cup goal. Unfortunately, the final whistle was blown soon after.

This marks Brazil's earliest exit from a World Cup since 1990. The team was among the favorites to take home the title this year, but it will be Norway that marches on.

Norway will face the winner of Sunday night's game between Mexico and England in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
