Recaps
Norway Shock Brazil
Erling Braut Haaland, slayer of giants.
The Norwegian striker fired home a brace, sending Norway to the quarterfinals behind a stunning 2-1 defeat of Brazil.
Haaland generally cuts more of a Goliath figure out on the pitch than one of David, but not when facing down a legacy powerhouse like Brazil. And yet topple the giants he did, and it was absolutely what Norway deserved on the day.
The Norwegians ultimately held 66 percent of possession and had more attempts on goal (5-4). They defended brilliantly and goalkeeper รrjan Nyland was class, though Brazilโwhich held an xG advantage of 2.74 to 0.73 and had 14 shots on the dayโwill lament chances left wanting.
There was Bruno Guimarรฃes' missed penalty. Endrick's failure to capitalize when he was alone on goal on a counter-attack. The questionable decision to bring Neymar onto the field in the second halfโeven if he did score a late penaltyโperhaps hoping he had one last dose of magic left in the tank on the international stage.
This was not the Brazil we've come to expect, but it's the one Norway were tasked with beating. They did just that, spearheaded by their inevitable striker. Row on, Norway.
