Egypt Eliminates Australia, Final Match Stats, Highlights & Updated World Cup 2026 Bracket

Egypt earned its first-ever knockout-round win at the FIFA men's World Cup in dramatic fashion on Friday.

Mohamed Salah and Co. defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 tie through 120 minutes.

Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed penalties in the first and fourth rounds. Egypt made all four of its penalties.

Australia will be questioned for its strategy in penalties, as it sent up two center backs and the 18-year-old Herrington. The Soccerros also subbed on veteran goalkeeper Matty Ryan for the shootout, but he failed to make a save.

Egypt took the lead early in the contest in the 13th minute by way of a header from Emam Ashour.

Australia leveled the game in the 55th minute by way of a set piece. The goal was officially credited as an own goal to Egypt's Mohamed Hany.

Both sides attempted to create the game-winning chance for the rest of regulation and extra time, but neither squad succeeded.

Egypt's victory advanced it to the round of 16 where it will most likely face Lionel Messi and Argentina on Tuesday in Atlanta.
