Lakers Trade Rumors Reveal 'Sacrifice' LA Made as Luka Doncic 'Wanted' Walker Kessler 'Most of All'

Mike ChiariJul 2, 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers' acquisition of center Walker Kessler on Wednesday was reportedly fueled by superstar guard Luka Dončić's desire to play alongside him.

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, Kessler was the player Dončić "wanted at center most of all," and a team source noted that it is believed Kessler will fit "perfectly" with both Dončić and Austin Reaves.

Per ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the Lakers have had longstanding interest in Kessler, as they inquired about him as far back as early in the 2023-24, and were "rebuffed on subsequent inquiries" due to Utah's high asking price.

Report: Lakers Targeting Centers

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday that the Lakers sent unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 and first-round pick swaps in 2028 and 2030 to the Jazz in exchange for Kessler, while also signing him to a four-year, $130 million contract.

Per Woike, the move signaled the Lakers' willingness to sacrifice future flexibility since they now have no tradeable first-round picks available to them.

At the same time, the Lakers had to move quickly to bring in another major piece after they were informed by LeBron James that he intended to sign elsewhere in free agency.

While Kessler's profile pales in comparison to that of James, who is in the conversation as the greatest player of all time, Kessler is far younger and fills a much different role.

Center production has been a major issue for the Lakers over the past couple of seasons, but that should no longer be a concern with the 7'2" Kessler now in the fold.

Kessler, who will turn 25 this month, enjoyed a career year with the Jazz in 2024-25, averaging 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.

He seemed poised to build on that campaign last season with averages of 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.4 steals through five games, but his season came to an abrupt end when he required surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Assuming Kessler is fully healthy and good to go at the start of the 2026-27 season, he could prove to be the missing ingredient the Lakers have been looking for.

The Lakers now have scoring threats both inside and outside, and someone capable of making opposing teams pay on pick-and-rolls with Dončić.

Although the Lakers could come to regret the move down the line if it doesn't lead to championship contention and wins, it may have been a risk worth taking in an effort to get the most out of one of the NBA's best players in Dončić.
