Bulls' Updated Depth Chart, Salary Cap After Norman Powell Leaves Heat Following Giannis Trade
After the Miami Heat landed the biggest prize of the offseason by acquiring star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, they lost one of their top players to the open market.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, former Heat sharpshooter Norman Powell agreed to a two-year, $45 million contract with the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
Following Powell's arrival to Chicago, the team's depth chart now looks like this:
PG: Josh Giddey, Rob Dillingham, Collin Sexton
SG: Norman Powell, Anfernee Simons, Tre Jones
SF: Matas Buzelis, Dailyn Swain, Isaac Okoro
PF: Caleb Wilson, Patrick Williams, Guerschon Yabusele
C: Nic Claxton, Jalen Smith, Zach Collins
After spending three-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, Powell was traded to the Heat last offseason as part of a three-team deal that also included the Utah Jazz. He thrived in his lone season in Miami, appearing in 58 games with 52 starts and averaging a team-high 21.7 points while adding 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals on his way to earning his first career All-Star selection. He missed time toward the end of the season with a groin injury.
Powell is joining a Bulls team that desperately needs some more firepower. Chicago went the entire 2025-26 season without a player averaging 20 points per game and finished the year with a 31-51 record, missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
In addition to signing Powell, the Bulls are hoping to usher in a new era after hiring Tiago Splitter as head coach to replace Billy Donovan, who stepped down from the position after six seasons. Splitter spent last season as the interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and led the team to its first playoff appearance since 2021.
Hiring Splitter and adding Powell are positive signs that the Bulls are motivated to emerge from their rebuild and contend for a spot in the playoffs next season. Chicago will look to continue adding talent this offseason as it tries to build a competitive roster.
