Mexico Eliminates Ecuador, Final Match Stats, Highlights & Updated World Cup 2026 Bracket

Mexico advanced beyond the Round of 32 with a 2-0 win over Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night.

After multiple early chances, Mexico finally took a 1-0 lead due to Julián Quiñones' impressive finish with his right foot in the 22nd minute.

Nine minutes later, Mexico extended its lead to 2-0 after Raúl Jiménez scored off a slick pass from Quiñones.

Ecuador had a chance to cut the deficit to 2-1 just before the first half came to a close, although Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made a leaping save to keep his opponent scoreless.

Mexico nearly pushed its advantage to 3-0 midway through the second half, as a header from César Montes forced a one-handed save by Hernán Galíndez.

Ecuador struggled to generate scoring opportunities against Mexico's defense throughout the second half, ultimately sealing the final result.

Although Ecuador held 57 percent of possession throughout the match, the team only mustered one shot on goal.

After Mexico's streak of seven consecutive Round of 16 appearances at the World Cup was snapped in 2022, El Tri is back once again.

Mexico will now face the winner of Wednesday's clash between England and DR Congo.
