Every Team's Best Pitch to LeBron James In 2026 NBA Free Agency
LeBron James is officially an NBA free agent, and it sounds like he's open to joining, well... anyone.
According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, "LeBron James has instructed Rich Paul to talk to everyone around the league who is interested in him playing for them and come back to him with what the options are so he can make his decision, a source familiar with James' thinking told ESPN."
So, how exactly would your team pitch LeBron?
Below, you'll find the best loglines from each of the league's 30 organizations.
Atlanta Hawks
1 of 30
Pitch: A chance to mentor his future self.
Jalen Johnson isn't going to develop into LeBron James, but there are undoubtedly some similarities.
He's huge, very athletic and now his team's primary playmaker. There's no one better to help him navigate this career path than LeBron.
And the GOAT candidate could take a lot of pride in helping Johnson find his next level.
Boston Celtics
2 of 30
Pitch: Become the third player in league history to win a championship with both the Lakers and Celtics.
Look, things seem awfully rocky in Boston right now. The relationship between Jaylen Brown and the organization is tense.
But if the Celtics do end up dealing the 2024 Finals MVP, they'll have a need at forward, and LeBron could fill it and keep Boston in the title hunt.
Brooklyn Nets
3 of 30
Pitch: Save us!
It's not Madison Square Garden or New York's more famous franchise, but LeBron could have some interest in conquering the league's biggest media market.
And if he turned them into winners, he'd have the added bonus of being able to say, "I fixed one of the most dire roster situations in the NBA with little more than my presence."
Charlotte Hornets
4 of 30
Pitch: Do what Michael Jordan couldn't.
LeBron's biggest competition for "greatest of all time" status is undoubtedly Michael Jordan, who owned the Charlotte Hornets for over a decade and could never really put a contender on the court.
If LeBron showed up, instantly took over one of the nation's basketball hotbeds and led it to a championship, he'd have another feather in his cap that MJ doesn't.
Chicago Bulls
5 of 30
Pitch: Return Us To Glory
This is more of a request than a pitch, but the Chicago Bulls have rarely been relevant (at least in terms of the championship chase) since Michael Jordan left in 1998.
LeBron helping the young core on Jordan's old team approach contention would make for a nice, sort-of full circle ending for his career.
Cleveland Cavaliers
6 of 30
Pitch: I mean, come on...
This one writes itself. LeBron grew up within an hour of Cleveland. He started his career for the Cavs. He brought them their first NBA championship. And now, they have a core ready to compete for another title around him.
With James Harden (assuming he re-signs), Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen all in place, there's a perfect LeBron-sized hole at the 3 for the legend to occupy.
Dallas Mavericks
7 of 30
Pitch: Mold Cooper Flagg
This is similar to the pitch from the Hawks, but Cooper Flagg may be even closer to the next LeBron than Johnson is. And his chances of reaching that ultimate ceiling would be higher with LeBron guiding him for a year.
Flagg has the size, athleticism and competitiveness to be a perennial All-Star. LeBron could help him add the playmaking that would make him a perennial MVP candidate.
Denver Nuggets
8 of 30
Pitch: You should've come here in 2018.
The Denver Nuggets famously tried to land LeBron James in 2018, before Nikola Jokić won any of his three MVPs or the team won its only title.
Had LeBron chosen them over the Lakers, there's a good chance he'd have more than the one title he picked up in the last eight years.
There's still time to remedy the misstep.
Detroit Pistons
9 of 30
Pitch: We're ready to deliver your fifth title right now.
At this point in his career, LeBron is probably too old to bear the weight of being a team's primary playmaker, and he wouldn't have to alongside Cade Cunningham.
He'd also be going to a team absolutely loaded with aggressive, physical defenders who can cover for him on that end.
In Detroit, LeBron could be the savvy vet, have everyone else do the dirty work and immediately contend for a championship.
Golden State Warriors
10 of 30
Pitch: Remember the Olympics?!
Just two short years, LeBron and Stephen Curry buried whatever was left of their 2010s rivalry, joined forces on Team USA, had instant chemistry and won a gold medal together.
They're older now, and the Golden State Warriors supporting cast obviously isn't what Team USA's was.
But man, a retirement tour with Curry would be a blast.
Houston Rockets
11 of 30
Pitch: Come play with KD!
One of LeBron's other chief rivals of this era, Kevin Durant, is still playing at the level of a top 10-15 player. And his game, which comes with spectacular catch-and-shoot efficiency, would complement LeBron's perfectly.
Plus, though lineups with KD and LeBron would have some defensive challenges, Houston has plenty of young talent (including Amen Thompson) to potentially cover for that.
Indiana Pacers
12 of 30
Pitch: We're in the East, and Tyrese Haliburton will make your life easy.
With the reigning champions in the East, and Kawhi Leonard headed there, the East may not feature the JV competition it has for much of the last 25 years, but it's probably still a little less of a grind than the West.
And in Indiana, specifically, LeBron would have tons of wide-open, low-stress looks generated for him by Tyrese Haliburton.
Being flanked by the defense of Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith and Pascal Siakam would be a nice benefit too.
Los Angeles Clippers
13 of 30
Pitch: You get to stay in LA.
Over the last eight years, LeBron certainly established a life for himself in L.A., and now the Clippers represent the only opportunity to continue that in roughly the same way.
Sure, the Intuit Dome is in Inglewood instead of Los Angeles, but that's a lot less of a hassle than some of the other potential moves would present.
And though L.A. no longer has Kawhi to help LeBron chase a fifth ring, a supporting cast of Darius Garland and Brandon Ingram would at least keep the Clippers competitive.
Los Angeles Lakers
14 of 30
Pitch: Don't be a journeyman.
This ship appears to have sailed, but if LeBron canvases the league and doesn't love any of the options, maybe he could return to the Lakers, drop a "psyche!" and let them know he's willing to play there at a discount, after all.
He's already gotten used to his role playing alongside Luka Dončić. His son is still on the team. And staying there would keep the number of organizations he's played for at three.
Memphis Grizzlies
15 of 30
Pitch: You won't have to worry about the hotel (and we have an awesome young core).
LeBron made some waves earlier this offseason when he publicly complained about the accommodations in Memphis when visiting there for road trips. Joining the team and buying a house there could help him avoid the hotel altogether.
On a more serious note, the Grizzlies fans embrace their stars as much as any group in the league. And in Memphis, LeBron would get the opportunity to play with and mentor one of the most exciting young cores in the NBA.
Miami Heat
16 of 30
Pitch: Get the Heat hat trick.
LeBron won two titles with the Heat, but he returned to Cleveland when it started to look like things were crumbling in Miami.
Now, the Heat have two stars in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. And while adding LeBron to those two would create some serious spacing concerns, the raw talent level would off the charts. And there's probably enough passing between the three of them to make it work.
Milwaukee Bucks
17 of 30
Pitch: Help us forget about Giannis?
This might be the least logical destination for LeBron. Milwaukee should be focused on rebuilding around young talent. And with or without James, the Bucks will be terrible this season.
But if he really has any hankering to be a mentor, this would be a good spot for it. He could also take some satisfaction in healing the wounded hearts of Bucks fans.
Minnesota Timberwolves
18 of 30
Pitch: We'll make your life easier than anyone else can.
At this stage, LeBron won't command the same kind of defensive attention that Anthony Edwards or LaMelo Ball will. If he was their teammate, he'd face a lot less pressure than he has at pretty much any point in his career.
He'd also be backed up by Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert on the other end of the floor.
And perhaps most importantly, his experience and leadership would be put to real use with this roster. Ball and Edwards are elite talents, but they've never shown the intangibles LeBron can help them with.
New Orleans Pelicans
19 of 30
Pitch: Cajun food (and the chance to mentor Zion Williamson).
New Orleans is another spot that really doesn't make a ton of sense for LeBron, but that city and region has some of the absolute best food the country has to offer. That's something.
And this is another situation that could really use LeBron's leadership. When he's healthy, there are still moments and games in which Zion Williamson looks like a bona fide superstar, but consistency (or lack thereof) has long been a problem.
LeBron could absolutely help him turn that around.
New York Knicks
20 of 30
Pitch: Come win another championship with us.
There may not be another situation in the league that would look more like "ring chasing" than LeBron joining the reigning champion New York Knicks.
He also wouldn't have the satisfaction of being the one who ended New York's 50-plus-year title drought. The current Knicks just did that.
But from a purely basketball perspective, this is one of the moves that might make the most sense. LeBron would fit seamlessly into the switch-heavy wing groupings with OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart. His playmaking would take a lot of responsibility off Jalen Brunson's shoulders. And the defensive attention Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns command would open up scoring opportunities for LeBron.
Adding him to this title-winning core would make New York a near-shoo-in to get back to the Finals.
Oklahoma City Thunder
21 of 30
Pitch: Play with the best player in the world.
Fans of the Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs may quibble over the characterization in that pitch, but there's clearly an argument that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the best basketball player in the world.
And playing with him would make life an awful lot easier for LeBron. SGA commands a ton of defensive attention. As does Jalen Williams. And with a floor-spacing big like Chet Holmgren, LeBron could enjoy wider driving lanes in OKC than he had in recent seasons with L.A.
This is obviously another stop that could absolutely lead to that fifth ring.
Orlando Magic
22 of 30
Pitch: Be our missing ingredient.
The Orlando Magic have a ton of talent and versatility at the forward spots with Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. The amount of defensive talent in the rotation is off the charts, too.
What they're missing is a high-end creator and distributor, and LeBron would obviously check that box.
With that skill, he could smooth out the sometimes shaky fit between Banchero and Wagner. And Orlando could cover for some of LeBron's defensive shortcomings as he continues to age.
Philadelphia 76ers
23 of 30
Pitch: Be our missing ingredient.
Assuming they're healthy (and that's a pretty big assumption in this case), the Philadelphia 76ers have a strong top four with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, Paul George and VJ Edgecombe. And there's a pretty natural spot for another forward to slot in between George and Embiid.
LeBron would fit perfectly. His playmaking would make life easier for Maxey and Edgecombe. He'd make it more difficult for opponents to throw double-teams at Embiid. And if he rediscovers his three-point stroke from a few years ago, it'd be harder for defenses to crowd Embiid or Edgecombe's paint touches.
Phoenix Suns
24 of 30
Pitch: We're pretty close to LA (and need another forward)!
If warm weather and proximity to Los Angeles is a real considerations for LeBron, the Phoenix Suns would be attractive.
And like others detailed above, there's a pretty obvious spot in the lineup for him.
Phoenix just acquired Miles Bridges, but he's not the playmaker LeBron is. Adding him to the forward corps would open up loads of scoring opportunities for Bridges and Devin Booker.
Portland Trail Blazers
25 of 30
Pitch: Another chance to mentor his future self.
Like Johnson with the Hawks, Deni Avdija isn't going to end his career in the same stratosphere as LeBron, but he's clearly benefitted from James' trail blazing.
He's another forward who runs his team's offense while also being its leading scorer. And this would be another opportunity for LeBron to help mold that kind of player.
Sacramento Kings
26 of 30
Pitch: Be the ultimate franchise savior.
Whatever player sets the Sacramento Kings on the path to seriousness and functionality will get a massive boost in legacy points.
And though he wouldn't have much time to do it, LeBron is exactly the kind of leader and franchise cornerstone who could give the organization a better idea of how to run things.
San Antonio Spurs
27 of 30
Pitch: Win a championship with Victor Wembanyama.
The San Antonio Spurs offer another low-stress situation in which LeBron could realistically earn that fifth ring.
Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox can handle the bulk of the playmaking. Victor Wembanyama, Harper and Castle would take a lot off LeBron's plate on the defensive end. And Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie would both pull defenses away from LeBron's drives and out to the three-point line.
Of course, the biggest draw here is simply playing with Wemby. Adding the face of the league for most of the last two decades to the new one would generate a ton of attention. And it'd be a fun sort of passing-of-the-torch season that could very well end with a championship.
Toronto Raptors
28 of 30
Pitch: We're ready to compete for another championship.
After years of dominating the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference playoffs, LeBron could put them over the top in their pursuit of another championship.
They have tons of defense between Scottie Barnes, Kawhi Leonard and Collin Murray-Boyles, but they lack an A1 playmaker. LeBron filling that role would make them a very real threat to emerge from the conference.
Utah Jazz
29 of 30
Pitch: Give a rabid fan base its first title.
The Utah Jazz's fans are some of the most loyal and passionate in the league. And though they've had several teams that have threatened for a title, they've yet to break through.
The chances of LeBron lifting this roster over the hump in his first year there are obviously small, Utah looks poised to start competing again. And LeBron would certainly help them do that (while also accelerating the development of Ace Bailey and Darryn Peterson).
Washington Wizards
30 of 30
Pitch: Reunite with AD and mentor AJ Dybantsa.
LeBron won his most recent title with Anthony Davis' defense backing him up on one end and his finishing bolstering LeBron's playmaking on the other.
Those two clearly know how to play with each other. And in Washington, they'd be joined by another high-end playmaker in Trae Young and a potential future star in AJ Dybantsa.
