France Eliminates Sweden, Final Match Stats, Highlights & Updated World Cup 2026 Bracket

Kylian Mbappe became the FIFA World Cup's all-time knockout stage top-scorer on Tuesday as France eased beyond Sweden to set up a round of 16 clash with Paraguay.

The Real Madrid forward scored two in an incredible 3-0 win that saw Didier Deschamps' side play the type of scintillating attacking football that has Les Bleus marked as favourites to win the tournament. Bradley Barcola also grabbed one as the Europeans marched forward in style.

Barcola provided the first real moment of excitement after a slow start, skipping away from his marker on the left wing and dribbling towards the box before blasting over.

Mbappe was set free by Michael Olise just seconds later. He fired beyond Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, but the goal was ruled out after a tight offside call.

Mbappe then slammed a massive opportunity off the post after a smart cutback by Jules Kounde. The effort sandwiched two from Adrien Rabiot, the latter of which was an audacious attempt from distance.

Sweden continued to ride their luck. Olise nearly scored the goal of the tournament with a wonderful bicycle kick that cannoned off the post, before Ousmane Dembele curled a difficult follow up wide.

France continued to pressure, and finally got their payoff in the 45th minute. Dembele's quick thinking found Mbappe in the box; a shimmy later and the French forward had curled beyond a helpless Widell Zetterstrom to set a new all-time knockout stage record of nine goals. It wouldn't be long before he added to it.

Sweden went into halftime barely threatening the French goal, with just one shot on target from three attempts, a mere scratch compared to France's six from 14.

Unfortunately for Graham Potter's side, it only got worse after the break. Olise once again found space in the No. 10 position, brilliantly receiving the ball and sliding it through Gustaf Lagerbielke's legs to Barcola, who all-but ended the tie at 2-0.

France then turned it up another notch with a stunning third. Mbappe's incredible piece of skill set the move in motion, before Olise slipped a cutting pass beyond Sweden's defence and back to the striker, who netted his second of the game.

Deschamps was able to rest Mbappe for the final five minutes after a performance that once again showcased his pedigree on the biggest stage of them all.

France now face Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday. They are overwhelming favourites, but will need to be wary of a side that shocked the world by eliminating Germany on penalties after a stalwart defensive display.
