Raptors, Clippers' Updated Rosters, NBA Salary Cap After Kawhi Leonard Trade Ahead of Free Agency
The Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers agreed to a blockbuster trade on Tuesday ahead of the start of free agency that will send superstar Kawhi Leonard back to Canada.
Let's take a look at both team's updated and current rosters after the reported move.
Raptors
PG: Immanuel Quickley / Jamal Shead / Jaden Bradley
SG: RJ Barrett / Ja'Kobe Walter
SF: Kawhi Leonard / Allen Graves / Jamison Battle
PF: Scottie Barnes / Collin Murray-Boyles / Trayce Jackson-Davis
C: Jakob Poeltl
Clippers
PG: Darius Garland / Kris Dunn
SG: Keaton Wagler / Gradey Dick / Cameron Christie
SF: Derrick Jones Jr. / Baba Miller / Nick Martinelli
PF: Brandon Ingram / Isaiah Jackson / Yanic Konan Niederhäuser
C: Brook Lopez
The trade is another indication that the two organizations are moving in very different directions.
The Clippers have been in a rebuilding mode since trading James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers ahead of February's trade deadline (the latter proved to be a stroke of genius, as it included a protected pick that ultimately conveyed to the Clippers and became Wagler).
Granted, the Clippers may not have their own pick for the next three years (OKC has swap rights next season, the Philadelphia 76ers own their 2028 pick and the Sixers have swap rights in 2029, top-three protected). So completely bottoming out doesn't necessarily make sense.
Garland and Ingram will provide a solid one-two scoring punch and Wagler is hope for the future. But the Clippers feel like they may be a lottery team for the next few years.
The Raptors, on the other hand, are very intriguing. After taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the first round, expectations are growing, and the Leonard addition will only bolster them. Barnes is a two-way star, Barrett was fantastic in the playoffs, Collin Murray-Boyles showed some real promise during the regular season and the Raptors have excellent athleticism and depth across the board. In an Eastern Conference that feels pretty wide open, this is a bunch that could be a problem.
Much will depend on Leonard's health, as always. But we've seen him spearhead a championship run for the Raptors once. The team is banking on him and Barnes leading another such charge.
