Mauricio Pochettino Reportedly Offered USMNT Contract Extension Through 2030 World Cup

Adam WellsJun 26, 2026

Having led the United States to a first-place finish in group play at the World Cup for the first time since 2010, Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly been offered a contract extension.

Per The Athletic's Adam Crafton, the United States Soccer Federation has presented Pochettino with a contract that would keep him on as head coach through the next World Cup cycle in 2030.

Crafton noted no formal decision will be made until after this year's World Cup is complete.

Pochettino was originally hired by the U.S. in September 2024 after Gregg Berhalter was fired following a disappointing performance at the Copa América tournament.

According to Crafton, Pochettino's current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the World Cup. The two sides have been engaged in talks for "several months" about a new deal.

If Pochettino signs the extension and coaches through the 2030 World Cup, he will become the longest-tenured head coach for the United States men's team since Bruce Arena (1998 to 2006).

The 54-year-old Pochettino was coming off a tumultuous tenure at Chelsea. His longest stint managing a single club was five years at Tottenham from 2014 to 2019, leading the club to a runner-up finish in the 2018-19 Champions League campaign.

Pochettino also led PSG to Ligue 1 title during the 2021-22 season. He previously played for the Parisians from 2001 to '03.

Since taking charge of the United States men's national team, Pochettino has a 16-2-11 record. The crown jewel thus far has been the World Cup, which saw Team USA start with back-to-back wins over Paraguay and Australia by a combined score of 6-1.

Their momentum was halted with a 3-2 loss against Türkiye in the group-stage finale on Thursday, though the U.S. essentially trotted out an entirely new starting lineup having already clinched the top spot in Group D and a berth in the knockout round.

The two wins for the United States is its most in a single World Cup since 2002 when it advanced to the quarterfinals.

Next up for Pochettino and Team USA is a matchup against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 1.
