The wideout tweeted he'd rather go out on his own terms:

Smith, 36, is a five-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Associated Press First-Team All-NFL selection. For his career, he has 915 receptions, 13,262 receiving yards and 81 total touchdowns. He's posted eight seasons with over 1,000 yards and has been one of the most prolific receivers in the league over the duration of his career, per ESPN Stats & Information:

His 2005 season was also historically good, per Chris Wesseling of NFL.com:

Despite standing 5'9" and weighing just 185 pounds, Smith has been one of the best receivers in the game at tracking the ball and adjusting his body to make spectacular catches over the top of defensive backs. He was both an elite deep threat and a dangerous weapon after the catch during his prime.

Another trait may ultimately define Smith, however, as Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated noted:

Few receivers, big or small, have been as physical or fiery as Smith.

Without question, he deserves serious consideration for the Hall of Fame after his career. Smith was one of the most consistent receivers of his generation, even if he didn't receive the attention of headline-grabbers like Randy Moss or Terrell Owens during his prime.

Plus, Smith has another season to add to his already impressive statistical legacy. After catching 79 passes for 1,065 yards and six touchdowns last season with the Ravens, Smith certainly appears to have another big season left in the tank.
