Knicks' Championship Parade Expected to Draw 'Millions' of Fans, NYPD Commissioner Says
New York is going to throw quite the party Thursday.
New York Police Department commissioner Jessica Tisch said the expectation is "millions" of fans will be in attendance for the parade to celebrate the New York Knicks' NBA Finals win over the San Antonio Spurs, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic.
The NYPD will have more than 10,000 officers there to help things run smoothly for a parade that is expected to have far more people in attendance than the 2012 one for the New York Giants that featured approximately one million spectators.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani previously announced the parade will start at 10 a.m. ET and run through the iconic Canyon of Heroes route in Lower Manhattan along Broadway from Battery Park up to City Hall, per Jesse Zanger and Mark Prussin of CBS News.
"It will be the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history, where New Yorkers will be able to celebrate a moment that feels like we've waited an entire lifetime for because when it comes to people my age and a little bit older, we have," Mamdani said Sunday. "There have been so many heartbreaks, so many near misses, so many years, every year where we've told ourselves it's the year and for it to actually happen now, there's nothing more we can ask for as New Yorkers."
There was no heartbreak this year.
While the Knicks fell behind in each of the five NBA Finals games by double digits, they came back to win four of them. None of the comebacks were as dramatic as Game 4 when New York completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history by overcoming a 29-point deficit.
Jalen Brunson then put the finishing touches on the championship with a stunning 45-point performance in Game 5.
The guard took home NBA Finals MVP and will forever be a Knicks legend for his role as the on-court leader and go-to option for the championship team that will be celebrated in front of millions of fans during Thursday's parade.
