Brendan Sorsby's Scouting Report Addressed by CFB Coaches Ahead of Texas Tech's Season

Paul KasabianJun 9, 2026

College football insiders recently spoke with Bruce Feldman of The Athletic about what Texas Tech quarterback Brandon Sorsby will bring to the table after he transferred from Cincinnati.

"He's a big kid that can do it all," a Power 4 QB coach told Feldman. "He can run. He can throw. He's accurate. He makes all the off-platform throws. He's a frickin' competitor. He's not soft. He does not turn the ball over and he does not miss open guys. He had 36 total TDs and only six turnovers. He is about as good as you can be at all the stuff that you can't coach — the off-platform throws, the tight-window throws."

However, a Big 12 personnel director provided some pessimism, per Feldman.

"If you think that he's going to plug-and-play into this of whatever level of NFL talent you think that he's capable of, I think that is sorely underestimating the mental toll this is probably taking on him. He is 0-8 in November the last two years. We watched every game that he's played for the last two seasons. He is toolsy, but it's never been to the point, outside of maybe the game they played against Tech two years ago, where you felt this is the best dude on the field.

"I get it: He can run and he's got a good arm, but you watch the tape, there's just some bad things, some strange losses and some clunker performances. Just a lot of it. And if you think about whatever he's gone through the last year, and the scrutiny he's already gone through, and now the scrutiny that he's going to receive and he's gonna come out and perform at a higher level? Man, that's a hard scenario to see."

The NCAA ruled Sorsby ineligible after an investigation revealed that he bet on college sports, per Stephen Hawkins of the Associated Press. Texas judge Ken Curry granted a temporary injunction allowing Sorsby to play on Monday. The NCAA is appealing the decision.

Sorsby has been a starting quarterback for three seasons. He spent 2023 with Indiana before transferring to Cincinnati and playing two years for the Bearcats.

Last season, Sorsby completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,800 yards (8.3 yards per attempt), 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. He rushed for 580 yards and nine more scores.

Texas Tech enjoyed a great 2025 season that included a phenomenal defense led by superstars Jacob Rodriguez and David Bailey. The Red Raiders won the Big 12 and finished with a 12-2 record. Their season ended with a 23-0 loss to Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Some key members of the team (including Rodriguez and Bailey) are gone to the pros, but the team is reloading with a transfer class ranked sixth in the nation, per 247Sports. The freshman class is solid too at 15th overall.

With Sorsby deemed eligible, Texas Tech looks like it should be competitive once again. ESPN's Mark Schlabach ranked the Red Raiders eighth in his "way-too-early" April rankings.

Texas Tech opens the season on Sept. 5 against Abilene Christian.
