Wemby Jokes About 'Villain' Status in Comparison to Trae Young After Spurs' Game 3 Win vs. Knicks
Victor Wembanyama might be making some enemies in New York, but he knows he's not Madison Square Garden's biggest villain just yet.
The San Antonio Spurs star said Trae Young still holds that title.
"I guess," Wembanyama said. "I'm nowhere near Trae Young level, though."
While he may not be MSG's biggest villain just yet, Knicks fans clearly don't like Wembanyama after he led the Spurs to a crucial win in Game 3.
Young, who is now with the Washington Wizards, became public enemy No. 1 in New York in 2021 during the first round of the playoffs when he was still with the Atlanta Hawks.
Young put together a tremendous series, posting 29.2 points and 9.8 assists as the Hawks beat the Knicks in five games. Young also let his personality show during that series, which rubbed fans in New York the wrong way.
Clearly, Knicks fans still don't like Young five years later. New York mayor Zohran Mamdani even joked that Young was the reason for playoff ticket prices, a slight that Young responded to on social media.
It could be a while before Young faces the Knicks in the playoffs again, since he's now on a rebuilding Wizards team, so Wembanyama might have the chance to steal his crown as New York's biggest villain.
Wembanyama had a tremendous outing on Monday, posting 32 points, eight boards, six assists, two steals and three blocks to make it a 2-1 series.
He could draw even more ire from Knicks fans if he leads the Spurs to a big Game 4 win to tie the series on Thursday.
