Update on Christian Eriksen After Being Hospitalized Following Collapse During Match

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2026

Christian Eriksen has been released from the hospital and is "doing well" at home after he collapsed during a match against Ukraine on Sunday.

That news comes after it was announced Monday morning that he was expected to be discharged "soon."

"I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and is in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home," said Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen, according to the Associated Press.

"Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances," the organization said Sunday, per Colin Millar of The Athletic. "The match has been called off."

Boesen said Eriksen, who left the field under his own power, would undergo further testing at a local hospital on Sunday:

Denmark was leading 2-1 with goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle before the exhibition was abandoned.

During a Euro 2020 match against Finland, Eriksen experienced cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch. Teammate Simon Kjær and members of Denmark's medical staff were credited with responding quickly and helping to save his life.

Doctors subsequently placed an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator in Eriksen's chest. The device is intended to restart a person's heart if they suffer cardiac arrest.

Boesen said the pacemaker "responded as it should" Sunday: "He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him."

Following his Euro 2020 incident, Eriksen resumed his playing career after signing with Premier League club Bournemouth in January 2022. He moved on to Manchester United the following summer before joining Wolfsburg in September 2025.

With 151 appearances, the 34-year-old is the most capped player in Denmark history.
