Finland is the world champion.
Finland defeated Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in dramatic fashion in Sunday's 2026 IIHF Hockey World Championship gold-medal game at Swiss Life Arena in Zurich. Konsta Helenius scored the winning goal, preventing Switzerland from winning its first-ever gold on home ice.

It was the last country standing from a bracket that also saw Norway win the bronze medal with a 3-2 overtime victory over Canada on Sunday.
The Canadians fell short of a medal for a third straight year after they won their record 28th title in 2023.
As for the title game, the story was goalkeeper dominance until Helenius finally broke through with the winner. Switzerland goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced, while Finland goalkeeper Justus Annunen countered by turning away all 19.
The goalkeeper battle developed from a championship game that was billed as a classic matchup of a red-hot offense against a defensive team that consistently frustrates the opposition to playing below their potential.
After all, Switzerland entered play with a sparkling 9-0 record after a dominant 6-0 victory over Norway in the semifinals. All nine of those wins came by multiple goals, and the host country hasn't even had to sweat for much of the competition.
Yet Finland's only loss in the tournament was to Switzerland, which gave the strong defensive team a rematch opportunity. The previous loss to Switzerland was the only time it gave up more than two goals in a game entering Sunday's championship matchup, and it turned heads with a 4-2 win over Canada in the semifinals.
And the defense was on full display for both teams for much of the title game.
Despite a handful of powerplays on each side, the game was still scoreless through two periods. Switzerland even had a five-on-three opportunity early in the second period but was turned away by the Finland defense.
It was more of the same in the third period, as neither offense could solve Genoni and Annunen. The two goalkeepers traded highlight saves in the most pressure-packed moments when a single mistake could have decided the gold medal, and the result was three-on-three overtime without a single goal.
Someone was going to score eventually, though, and Helenius delivered a goal he will remember forever.
