A 4-Team NBA Blockbuster Jaylen Brown Trade Idea

Dan FavaleMay 29, 2026

Despite saying he'd like to stick with the Boston Celtics for the next 10 years, Jaylen Brown's name continues to get bandied about the rumor mill—for a multitude of reasons.

Most recently, The Stein Line's Marc Stein reported "there is a belief in some corners of the league that Atlanta, Houston and Portland all have legitimate trade interest" in acquiring Beantown's now-two-time All-NBA star.

This comes on the heels of Celtics president Brad Stevens' spotlighting the team's lack of rim pressure, and in tandem with Stein confirming that Boston sniffed around Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of February's trade deadline.

That's enough smoke for us to start flexing our hypothetical-trade muscles.

Rather than spit out another Giannis-for-Brown permutation, though, we're pouncing on the Houston Rockets' reported interest. Did we find a deal that works? It took four teams, eight players, six draft picks and countless sanity checks, but we think so.

The Trade

New Orleans Pelicans Receive: Dorian Finney-Smith, Caris LeVert, No. 21 pick (via Detroit), No. 27 pick (via Boston), Houston's 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick (most favorable from Houston, Dallas or Phoenix, via Houston)

Why the Boston Celtics Do It

In: Saddiq Bey, Trey Murphy III, Jabari Smith Jr., Phoenix's 2027 first-round pick

Out: Jaylen Brown, No. 27 pick

Net Salary (including No. 27 pick): Saving $3 million

This package doesn't solve the Celtics' rim-pressure problem free and clear. Brown just averaged 3.1 shots at the basket in the half-court. Bey (2.5), Murphy (2.4) and Smith (0.3) all checked in noticeably below that mark.

Still, Brown's overall rim frequency has dipped through each of the past three seasons, culminating in his most recent career-low mark. The Celtics are adding volume in the aggregate by turning him into three core rotation players. Murphy's rim pressure also rises when factoring in transition, and Smith should see his looks at the rim spike in Boston's spacing environment.

Deepening the rotation in lieu of acquiring a caps-lock STAR is worth consideration. The Celtics lose from-scratch shot creation, but diversify their cap sheet so it isn't so top-heavy. Both Murphy and Smith also have runway to grow as on-ball options, even if they'll never be table-setters for others. And Bey actually scored more unassisted two-pointers this season than Victor Wembanyama, per PBP Stats.

Though Phoenix's 2027 first no longer looks like hot property after the Suns' performance this year, it is a higher-end selection than Boston's No. 27 choice in June. Between that, maintaining room beneath the luxury tax and the redistribution of salary across the rotation, the Celtics increase their optionality in future trades—assuming they even need to make one.

Why The Detroit Pistons Do It

In: Fred VanVleet, No. 39

Out: Caris LeVert, Marcus Sasser, No. 21 pick

Net Salary (including No. 21 pick): Adding $1.1 million

President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon doesn't sound like someone preparing to significantly overhaul the Detroit Pistons' roster following their second-round exit. That is a reasonable stance after winning 60 games during the regular season. But wait-and-let-marinate also can't be the default for a team about to have both Cade Cunningham and, presumably, Jalen Duren on large contracts.

Acquiring VanVleet would be a palatable middle ground. His style is ready-made to coexist alongside Cunningham. He can handle the rock in traffic but doesn't need to dominate it; puts pressure on defenses with his half-court driving and off-ball gravity; and doesn't need to be hidden on the defensive end.

Recovery from an ACL injury that cost the 32-year-old all of this past season is the biggest variable. At 32, standing just 6'0", VanVleet could lose a step at either end. But Detroit doesn't have to be in this for the long haul. FVV's deal comes off the books after next season.

Punting on this year's first-rounder might seem like overkill, particularly when the Pistons moved up the board (from No. 28 to No. 21). It's not.

VanVleet is more of an immediate difference-maker than anyone Detroit can select at the end of the first round. Getting him in exchange for moving down 18 spots on the draft board and two players who don't heavily factor into the bigger picture is the exact type of happy medium the front office should be looking to strike if it's not contemplating all-in moves.

Why the Houston Rockets Do It

Houston Rockets v Boston Celtics

In: Jaylen Brown, Marcus Sasser

Out: Dorian Finney-Smith, Jabari Smith Jr., Fred VanVleet, No. 39 pick, 2027 first-round pick, Phoenix's 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick

Net Salary: Adding $0.3 million

Pairing Brown with Kevin Durant and Alperen Şengün provides an instant boost to a Rockets half-court offense desperately in need of one. While JB isn't the cleanest initiator for others, he makes up for it with a more versatile shot-making armory than anyone else on the roster—including, at this point, KD.

The trickle-down effect alone could be massive in Houston. Job descriptions for KD, Şengün and Amen Thompson get a lot more manageable. The Rockets could still use a floor-general type with VanVleet headed out the door, but Reed Sheppard might have an easier time gaining head coach Ime Udoka's trust if he gets to play beside yet another jumbo-sized wing who can create his own shot and doesn't give up anything on defense.

Three first-round picks is a lot for a player whose contract balance (three years, $183.1 million) hovers somewhere between net neutral and polarizing. Brown's big-picture money could impact how Houston negotiates new deals for Tari Eason (restricted) and Thompson (extension eligible).

Offloading Smith's deal and, more critically, the Finney-Smith contract softens the blow. Brown opens up the floor far more than either of them, making him a more palatable fit within lineups featuring both Şengün and Thompson.

Remaining almost neutral in the 2026-27 salary department helps as well. Plus, between Houston's own ceiling next year and Phoenix's scrappy play under head coach Jordan Ott, the Rockets can convince themselves they're forking over only one first-rounder with any serious upside.

Why the New Orleans Pelicans Do It

In: Dorian Finney-Smith, Caris LeVert, No. 21 pick, No. 27 pick, Houston's 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick (most favorable of Dallas, Houston and Phoenix)

Out: Saddiq Bey, Trey Murphy III

Net Salary (including No. 21 and No. 27 picks): Adding $1.7 million

Everyone around the league has spent months on end trying to figure out 1) what the New Orleans Pelicans are actually doing and 2) how much it'll take to extract Murphy out of The Big Easy.

I won't pretend to have even the outlines of an answer to the first question. But to answer the second question: Four first-round picks feels like a good start.

Yes, New Orleans has to swallow the three years and $40 million left on Finney-Smith's contract. That's not the end of the world unless the Pelicans are operating on a more urgent timeline than they should be.

Adding two first-rounders from a draft New Orleans currently won't partake in until No. 58 helps replenish the cost-controlled pipeline. The Rockets' 2027 first-rounder has limited appeal on the surface, but likely lottery reform gives it extra flair if a brutal Western Conference nudges Houston down the pecking order. Most-favorable language on that 2029 pick renders it a legit gem.

The Pelicans might have the leverage to push for more. Perhaps they can get the Suns' 2027 pick instead of Houston's selection. If they aren't concerned about their payroll or have another move lined up, they can try withholding Saddiq Bey, who is more than a throw-in and also a favorite of general manager Troy Weaver.
