Cavs' Dan Gilbert Reacts to Knicks Sweep, Says Team is 'Nowhere Near Where We Need to Be'
After getting swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, Cleveland Cavaliers governor Dan Gilbert admitted Monday night that the Cavs have a long way to go before being championship contenders.
In a post on X, Gilbert thanked Cavs fans and congratulated the Knicks, while adding, "We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be."
After a second-round playoff exit last season despite having the best record in the Eastern Conference at 64-18, the Cavaliers shook things up this season by acquiring veteran guard James Harden in a deal that sent Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Cavs finished only 52-30 during the regular season due largely to a slow start that saw them sitting at 17-16 at one point, but they took a significant step forward during the postseason.
Cleveland secured a pair of Game 7 victories, beating the Toronto Raptors in the first round and the Detroit Pistons in the second round to reach its first ECF since 2018.
However, once there, the Cavaliers were completely and utterly outclassed by the Knicks, losing every game of the series by double digits, including Monday's Game 4 by a 130-93 score.
It is fair to wonder if things may have been different had the Cavs not squandered a 22-point, fourth-quarter lead in Game 1.
The Cavaliers lost that contest 115-104 in overtime, and they weren't particularly competitive for the remainder of the series after that.
While the core of guard Donovan Mitchell and bigs Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen is under contract for next season, Harden has a player option.
Should Harden opt in, it may be a challenge for the Cavs to make significant changes to their roster, but if he opts out, it perhaps opens the door for some tweaks around the remaining core.
Regardless of what happens with Harden, the Cavs could have a long road back to the Eastern Conference next season with the Knicks and Boston Celtics returning most of their key players, and the likes of the Pistons, Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets seemingly all being on the rise.
