SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey Provides Updates on Potential CFP Expansion, Format Changes
College Football Playoff expansion—potentially up to 24 teams—has been a hot topic of conversation this offseason, and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey weighed in on Monday from the SEC spring meetings.
"We'll look at a variety of ideas but really look at the process for how we come to a conclusion, whether it's remaining at 12 or some other number," he told reporters regarding what the SEC would discuss this week regarding potential College Football Playoff expansion.
He said no decisions would be made this week, however, among a number of comments he gave regarding potential Playoff expansion:
As for the negative fan reaction to expansion—much as college basketball fans railed against the NCAA tournament being expanded to 76 teams before the change was made anyway—Sankey didn't seem bothered.
"It's not like it's scientific research," he said of backlash to Playoff expansion. "... I don't disregard it, but that also shouldn't necessarily be the primary course of information."
One would imagine a primary course of information would be how much money the SEC and its schools could potentially make from expansion, though the complications of scheduling and other logistics will surely be factored in as well. On the other hand, an expanded Playoff means more SEC schools reach the Playoff, with plenty of SEC bubble teams from seasons past aggrieved at missing out.
