New NBA Rumors on Anthony Edwards, T-Wolves' 'Fear' About Star's Future, Potential Trade
Anthony Edwards is signed through the 2028-29 campaign, but the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly already worried about his future if the organization cannot take the next step as a title contender.
"It's about satisfying Ant," Timberwolves insider Darren Wolfson said on the Flagrant Howls podcast (17:20 mark). "The fear is, that at some point, does Ant through his representation, Bill Duffy and others, signal a desire to be elsewhere? We are nowhere near that point, but the fear is there. So Ant, I'm sure deep down knows that he can't get to where he wants to get to with this roster."
Minnesota has been to the playoffs five straight seasons and reached back-to-back Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025 with Edwards leading the way. It also lost in the second round this season to the San Antonio Spurs after losing last season's Western Conference Finals to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
And those two losses underscore the predicament the team is facing at this point.
The Thunder and Spurs are built to compete for championships for the next decade-plus with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spearheading a talented and young core in OKC and Victor Wembanyama doing the same in San Antonio.
Even with one of the league's best players in Edwards, the Timberwolves are a step behind each of them in the West. Assuming good health, it is difficult to envision either the Thunder or the Spurs losing a best-of-seven series to Minnesota as currently constructed, and consecutive playoff losses could lead to further frustration on Edwards' part.
The possibility of that frustration turning into a trade request seems to be where the concern is for the front office, which figures to motivate it to make moves this offseason.
Perhaps it should come as no surprise, then, that The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski reported Minnesota is expected to explore a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade this offseason. The team was also connected to the Milwaukee Bucks star before the February trade deadline, although a deal never materialized.
Despite the speculation and worry about Edwards, Wolfson made it clear "we are nowhere near that point" when it comes to him potentially requesting a trade.
Edwards himself also said, "I feel like we good" when asked if he thought the team needed another star alongside him in the lineup:
He may feel that way now, but there still seems to be some worry he may change his mind in the future.
