New NBA Rumors on Ausar Thompson Contract, Tobias Harris' Free-Agent Market After Pistons' Loss
The Detroit Pistons are going to have some soul-searching to do this offseason after Sunday night's disappointing Game 7 loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers, ending their season.
Ausar Thompson, for instance, is now extension eligible. According to Hunter Patterson of The Athletic, "Per a league source, Detroit views Thompson as part of its core and will seek to get a rookie-scale extension done with the third-year wing in the offseason. Thompson tallied more 'stocks' than anyone in the postseason (28 steals and 25 blocks), and his impact was undeniable despite his offensive limitations."
If Thompson works on his offensive game, he could be a highly valuable two-way player for the Pistons. But he has a long way to go in that regard after averaging just 8.2 points in the playoffs, shooting a measly 14.3 percent from three.
Tobias Harris is heading to unrestricted free agency, and per that report, "As valuable as Harris was to start the postseason, he couldn't sustain his level of offensive production as the playoffs pushed on. Harris will likely have multiple suitors around the league, in addition to the Pistons, this summer."
The 33-year-old was miscast as the team's second scoring option during the playoffs—out of necessity, given Jalen Duren's surprising struggles—but didn't make a field goal in Game 7, scoring five points, and was also held to six points in a Game 6 win.
It's clear the Pistons need a more reliable second scoring option behind Cunningham. Whether they are willing to break up their young core to acquire one remains to be seen.
