Wemby Is 'Best Player I've Ever Seen,' Says NBA Exec as SGA Wins MVP Award Before Spurs-Thunder

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rolled to a second straight MVP, but one NBA executive asserted the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is on a different level from his peers.

The exec went beyond saying Wembanyama is the league's best player right now.

"He's the best player I've ever seen," they told The Athletic's John Hollinger.

Hollinger also spoke to a personnel expert who cited the obvious matchup problems with the 7'4" Frenchman.

"I don't know what the hell you do with him," they said. "Offense. Defense. Any of it."

Wembanyama arrived with more hype than any prospect since at least LeBron James in 2003. He justified the attention as a rookie and had another standout season in 2024-25, albeit only appearing in 46 games.

This year, Wemby turned a corner to truly become a two-way force. He averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks during the regular season. He was the unanimous pick for Defensive Player of the Year while placing third on the MVP ballot.

For rival teams, the Spurs advancing to the Western Conference Finals only three years into Wembanyama's career is the most foreboding sign for the future.

San Antonio is led by a 22-year-old centerpiece who hasn't even entered his prime yet. And he embodies the old cliche that you can't coach size.

"He just has the ability to cover up so many mistakes, including ones that he'll make," one player anonymously said in a poll by The Athletic's Josh Robbins, Sam Amick and Joe Vardon. "Just his ability to erase mistakes is extremely impressive where guys drive in the paint and see him and turn around and dribble out. Like, no one does that in the NBA."

It's unfair to burden Wembanyama with more expectations when he shoulders so much already. Still, the excitement and praise are understandable when projecting out how he could continue to evolve on the court.

There may not be a player like him ever in the history of the NBA.
