Wemby Reacts to Spurs Clinching Western Conference Finals Berth for 1st Time Since 2017
Victor Wembanyama is heading to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in his career, and he can't believe it.
"The words 'conference finals' seem surreal right now," the San Antonio Spurs star said following his team's 139-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6 of their second-round series. "It's like something I've heard my whole life, and now we're in it. It's kind of unreal. But at the end of the day, it's just basketball. We know what we've gotta do."
While the Spurs won five championships from 1999 to 2014, this is the first time they've been to the conference finals since 2017.
But it might become a habit considering Wembanyama is just 22 years old and already in discussions as the best player in the league. Throw in young talent in the supporting cast such as Stephon Castle, who had 32 points Friday, and Dylan Harper, and it seems like there is no ceiling for this group.
Yet the same can be said of the loaded Oklahoma City Thunder, who are standing in San Antonio's way.
The reigning champions have home-court advantage and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way, which means the Spurs are facing a daunting challenge.
But Wembanyama didn't seem too worried about an experience disadvantage when he said, "I feel like lack of experience, if we don't know it's impossible, we will do it."
If they do actually do it, it will surely be Wembanyama leading the way as the Defensive Player of the Year on one side and a matchup nightmare who can take over a game on the other side.
