Texas A&M earned a major recruiting victory Friday.

According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Matthews is a 5-star prospect, the No. 5 overall player and the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2027 recruiting class.

While Texas A&M's 2025 campaign came to an end with a College Football Playoff loss to Miami, it earned some revenge on the Hurricanes with this development. Matthews is from Florida and near Miami, and Chris Hummer of CBS Sports noted the ACC program was "considered the frontrunner" for much of his recruitment.

Jackson DiPasquale of 247Sports reported both Miami and LSU made late pushes with in-home visits prior to Friday's announcement.

Alas, Texas A&M still won out and continued its recruiting momentum.

The Aggies are the top-ranked team in the country in 247Sports' 2027 recruiting rankings with two 5-star players and 11 players ranked as 4-stars. It is only May, and they already have a formidable core as they look to put together a class that could lead them to championships in the future.

Matthews will be a major part of those efforts if he lives up to expectations.

Andrew Ivins of 247Sports pointed to Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Tristan Wirfs as a player comparison, which is quite the bar to set.

After all, Wirfs was the No. 13 overall pick of the 2020 NFL draft and already has a Super Bowl title, two First-Team All-Pro selections and five Pro Bowl nods on his resume through six seasons at the sport's highest level.

Ivins highlighted Matthews' overall athleticism, mobility and quickness, which allows him to get to the next level in run blocking and protect his quarterback from twitchy defense ends on passing plays.

And now he will turn his attention toward doing those things at Texas A&M after making his decision.
