New NBA Draft Rumors on AJ Dybantsa Visits at Combine with Wizards Meeting 'Multiple Players'
While AJ Dybantsa is widely projected to be one of the first two to three players off the board in the NBA draft, he met with plenty of teams at the NBA combine aside from those drafting early.
Per ESPN's Marc J. Spears, the BYU star met with the Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers.
The Wizards, who hold the top pick, are expected to meet with "multiple players," according to Spears.
Spears also reported that the Utah Jazz, who currently hold the No. 2 pick, have reached out to the Wizards about trading up for the No. 1 pick.
Dybantsa put up 25.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game at BYU last year, shooting 51 percent from the field and 33.1 percent from deep while earning Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors.
Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman projects Dybantsa to be taken first overall by Washington in his latest mock draft. Wasserman compared Dybantsa to Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown in his full scouting report.
While Dybantsa seems like a sure thing when it comes to an NBA prospect, the Wizards reportedly aren't married to the idea of staying at No. 1 to draft him. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported after the draft lottery that Washington will "at least consider trading down" as it doesn't see this year's draft as a "savior moment" following trades for stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young this season.
Fischer also noted that Jazz executive Danny Ainge said, "we're open. We'll always listen" regarding trading up.
Considering Dybantsa played his final season of high school basketball in Utah before attending BYU, being taken by the Jazz could be a full-circle moment for one of the best draft prospects in recent years.
If Washington is willing to swap picks with the Jazz, it would still end up with a solid prospect, considering how strong this year's draft class is. Kansas star Darryn Peterson is right alongside Dybantsa on many draft boards, while Duke's Cameron Boozer and North Carolina's Caleb Wilson are also seen as potential NBA stars.
