Bill Belichick's UNC Will Wear Throwback Uniforms for 2026 Game, Helmet Shown Off in New Photo
UNC football will wear a throwback uniform for a to-be-determined game to honor the 1980 ACC championship team, which was led by future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor, won 11 games and finished ninth in the final Coaches poll.
Per UNC Assistant A.D./Football Communications & Branding Justin Wilson, the jerseys are part of a year-long celebration honoring the 100th season of Kenan Stadium, UNC's home field.
Wilson also noted the jerseys will feature "Carolina" across the front of the jerseys, and the helmets (as seen above) feature the UNC stairstep logo.
The legendary 1980 UNC team started 7-0 and finished 11-1 with a win over Texas in the Bluebonnet Bowl. The Tar Heels also went a perfect 6-0 in ACC play.
The current UNC program is entering its second season under head coach Bill Belichick, who won two Super Bowls as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator and six more as the New England Patriots' head coach (eight total).
Belichick's Tar Heels went 4-8 in 2025 (2-6 in ACC). They open the season on Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin and begin the ACC slate on Sept. 19 at Clemson. UNC has the No. 17-ranked recruiting class of 2026, per 247Sports, with nine 4-star recruits leading the way.
