Wemby Reflects on Video of Gregg Popovich Meeting Him at Airport After Ejection in Spurs' G4 Loss
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama says former longtime coach Gregg Popovich "wanted to make a statement" by meeting his team at the airport on Monday following their second-round Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"He maybe wanted to make a statement, or make his talking even more impactful, by being there," Wembanyama said after the Spurs claimed a 3-2 series lead by winning Game 5 Tuesday night. "He gives feedback and talks to us regularly through our series, through our games.
"As always, when he speaks, everybody listens."
Popovich could be seen speaking to Wembanyama at the San Antonio airport on Monday in a video shared by KENS 5 San Antonio.
Wembanyama had been ejected from the Spurs' loss the night prior after he was assessed a Flagrant 2 Foul for an elbow on the Timberwolves' Naz Reid.
Wembanyama was ultimately not suspended for the play. He responded Tuesday night by contributing 27 points and 17 rebounds to the Spurs' 126-97 Game 5 victory.
Popovich, who stepped away from coaching the Spurs after suffering a stroke in November 2024, has remained around the team in a front office role. He is regularly seen at practices, and Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News recently reported he has been providing advice to both coaches and players during the team's playoff run.
Wembanyama and the Spurs will now have the chance to close out their second-round series and advance to the Western Conference Finals with a Game 6 win this Friday in Minneapolis.
