New 76ers Rumors on Daryl Morey, Nick Nurse's Hot Seats After NBA Playoff Loss to Knicks
Philadelphia 76ers ownership will evaluate the futures of coach Nick Nurse and president of basketball operations Daryl Morey in the wake of a second-round sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks.
The Athletic's Tony Jones reported Monday that "ownership has not made final decisions on either and is likely to take a few days to assess before making any major calls."
"Internally, the volatility of this year cannot be ignored heading into the offseason," Jones wrote. "From a tumultuous trade deadline to late-season frustrations between players and coaches that nearly derailed a shootaround, tension simmered throughout the year. On many nights, the team barely knew who would be available."

Players, Teams Destined For Breakup 💔

On Nurse specifically, Jones added that "tensions" existed between Sixers players and staffers, a factor that will be taken into account when evaluating the head coach.
Spirits were high in Philly after the Sixers' 109-100 Game 7 victory over the Boston Celtics. With star center Joel Embiid playing as well as he was, maybe an underdog run to the Finals was on the table.
Instead, a similar story played out as Embiid was sidelined for Game 2 and didn't get enough from the supporting cast to avoid elimination. The Sixers looked like they waved the white flag by Game 4, losing by 30 points and trailing by 44 at one point.
Some sort of change, be it to the coaching staff, front office or both, wouldn't be a shock. The problem for the franchise is that it may not matter.
Embiid is just starting the three-year, $187.9 million extension he signed, while Paul George is set to make more than $110 million over the next two seasons. Because of their sizable salaries, moving either star will be difficult, so Philly doesn't have much cap flexibility in the medium term.
The team doesn't have a lot in the way of trade assets, either. Guards Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe are presumably untouchable when they represent the organization's present and the future.
Morey's win-now moves haven't worked and the bill is coming due. Regardless of who's guiding personnel decisions this summer and moving forward, the 76ers' championship window could be slamming shut.
