Spurs HC Says Wemby Suspension Would Be 'Ridiculous,' Talks Star's Ejection for Elbowing Naz Reid
San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson does not believe Victor Wembanyama will face any additional punishment beyond his ejection from the team's 114-109 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 4 of their second-round series on Sunday.
"There was zero intent … I think it would be ridiculous," he told reporters when discussing the possibility of a suspension.
Wembanyama was ejected in the first half after he swung his elbow into Naz Reid's chin. Perhaps an early ejection will work in his favor, as the NBA could see it as essentially a one-game suspension that ended up hurting the Spurs in a loss.
Still, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News reported the NBA will review the play Monday to determine whether he will be available for Game 5.
It will be a massive decision.
Minnesota won Sunday's contest to tie the series at two games apiece. While the Spurs hung tough without their star big man and actually had a lead in the fourth quarter, his absence was felt in crunch time when the game was hanging in the balance.
Missing him for yet another contest would give the Timberwolves the opportunity to steal home-court advantage and move to within a single game of the Western Conference Finals.
Johnson was not happy with the overall physicality before the elbow and explained as much in his postgame press conference:
With the Defensive Player of the Year on the sidelines, the Spurs had no answers for Anthony Edwards. He finished with 36 points on 13-of-22 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from deep, while Reid provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and nine rebounds despite taking the elbow to the chin and temporarily leaving after turning his ankle.
Game 5 is Tuesday in San Antonio, and both teams will have the chance to seize control of the series.
Whether Wembanyama is on the court could be the determining factor.
