Charles Lee Lands Hornets Contract Extension After Leading LaMelo Ball, Charlotte to 44-Win Season
The Charlotte Hornets took a significant jump from head coach Charles Lee's first season to his second one, and they rewarded him accordingly.
Charlotte announced Thursday it agreed to a contract extension with the coach after he led the team to the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

"Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team," president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson said in the announcement. "From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve.
"He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism. I'm excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success."
The 2025-26 campaign was Lee's second one as the head coach of the Hornets after he was previously an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics.
They went 19-63 in his first year at the helm, and it looked like more of the same when they started 16-28 to start his second year. However, Charlotte went 28-10 from there and finished with a 44-38 mark.
Its 25-win improvement marked the largest year-to-year increase in wins in franchise history, and the end result was a spot in the play-in tournament. While it lost to the Orlando Magic after a win over the Miami Heat, the impressive turnaround seemingly set the foundation for what could be years of success under Lee.
With a young core of LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel leading the way, anything but a playoff appearance and perhaps deep run next season and beyond would be seen as a disappointment for the Hornets.
That will dial up some of the pressure on Lee, but the team clearly believes in him with this contract extension and will surely be ready to take the next step after getting a taste of postseason play in the play-in tournament.
