Lakers' Jaxson Hayes Gives Gruesome Description of Jarred Vanderbilt's Finger Injury in Video

Julia StumbaughMay 6, 2026

Jaxson Hayes was disgusted by the finger injury that knocked Jarred Vanderbilt out of the Los Angeles Lakers' Game 1 loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Vanderbilt suffered a full dislocation of his right pinkie that involved a bone breaking skin.

"Did you see the picture of the finger? It was disgusting. Bro, his whole bone was out of his skin," Hayes told reporters Wednesday (h/t ESPN's Dave McMenamin).

"Obviously, you never want to see one of your teammates go down, but that was gross. That was really gross... that was the most disgusting dislocation ever."

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Wednesday that Vanderbilt is considered day-to-day.

"They were able to put his finger back together and it's splinted and he's day-to-day," Redick said Wednesday about Vanderbilt's status, per McMenamin.

The Lakers and Thunder are set to tip off Game 2 in Oklahoma City at 9:30 p.m. ET Thursday night.

Vanderbilt suffered the injury after his right pinkie smacked the backboard as he went up to block a shot by the Thunder's Chet Holmgren with just under six minutes left in the second quarter.

Thunder players watching from the bench could be seen turning away to avoid looking at the injury as Vanderbilt was helped to the sideline.

"I went to look to go check on him, because it just looked bad," Redick said after the game. "He was audibly screaming, and knew he had done something... it's a freak injury."

Vanderbilt was ultimately ruled out from returning at halftime, leaving a Lakers depth chart already missing Luka Dončić even thinner for the rest of the 108-90 loss.

Austin Reaves, who averaged 23.3 points per game before missing the end of the regular season and beginning of the first round with an injury, was held to just eight points in Tuesday's loss.

The Lakers will hope to see more production from Reaves going forward, especially if Vanderbilt is unable to the Lakers' bench for Game 2.
