Wemby Takes Blame Despite Historic Performance in Spurs' Loss to Anthony Edwards, Wolves
San Antonio Spurs star big man Victor Wembanyama made history in Monday's Game 1 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but he would've preferred to get a win instead.
Wembanyama set a new NBA playoff record with a whopping 12 blocks while adding 11 points and 15 rebounds in Monday's 104-102 loss, joining Hakeem Olajuwon and Andrew Bynum as the only players ever to record a triple-double with blocks in postseason history.
However, while speaking to reporters after the game, Wembanyama shouldered the blame for the loss, saying that he should've made a bigger impact on offense.

"I feel like I had to use my energy," he said, per ESPN's Michael C. Wright. "Obviously, I used a lot of it on one side of the court. On the other side, offensively, I used too much energy on things that didn't really help our team. So, that's on me. There was some good and some bad. It's a lot on me because my game wasn't feeling good tonight [to] where the team is going to look for me. If I had been better, if the offensive leaders on our team would have been better, it would have been different. So, basically, if everything was different, it would have been different."
While some might think the 22-year-old is being too hard on himself, he was also a part of some unwanted history on Monday night. Wembanyama shot just 29 percent from the field and missed all eight of his attempts from beyond the arc, which marks the most misses from three-point range without a make by a player in Spurs playoff history.
The Timberwolves mainly relied on veterans Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle as Wembanyama's primary defenders. The youngster said he couldn't pinpoint what they did that was so effective.
"Honestly, I need to look at the film again to see a little bit more, the dynamics," he said. "Right now, it's a little bit blurry for me. I think I played the last 16 minutes of the game, maybe, and it just went by like this. That's not good. It means I didn't have the grasp on the game that I wish I did."
Wembanyama and the Spurs will try to regroup and bounce back in Game 2 against the Timberwolves on Wednesday night.
