New Steve Kerr Rumors Reveal Latest on Warriors HC Amid Contract, NBA Retirement Buzz
While Steve Kerr has spent the last decade-plus in the coaching world, a return to broadcasting could be in play if he decides to step away from the Golden State Warriors.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, "ESPN's top executives have been lobbying Kerr aggressively to try to convince him to return to the world of NBA broadcasting."
Golden State is "expected to meet with Kerr as early as Monday to resume discussions about his status" and "has been operating internally in recent days as though it is more likely than not that a common ground can be found" between the two sides.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater, Kerr met with Warriors owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy for two hours last week, but "there remains no resolution" about whether he'll stay with the team or not.
The Athletic's Nick Friedell noted that the meeting was "good" and "productive," yet there's no clear decision on his future. One league source told Monte Poole of NBC Sports that things are pointing towards Kerr not coaching next year.
"From what I understand, (Kerr) in those meetings didn't sound like someone who didn't plan on coaching next season," the source said.
Kerr has been one of the most successful coaches in both Warriors' history and NBA history, winning four titles alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and others.
Golden State's last title came in 2022, and the Dubs haven't found much success in the years since. With the franchise potentially heading towards a rebuild once Curry retires, it's easy to see why Kerr might prefer to step away from coaching.
But his loyalty to the team's veterans might keep him around for at least a few more years. He told Charles Bethea of The New Yorker that "this would be an easy decision" if Curry and Green were planning to retire this year as well, but that isn't the case.
"It's not that easy because I think Steph's going to play another couple of years and I think we can still do some good things together," Kerr told Bethea. "But these are all conversations that will happen in the next week or two and we'll figure it out. And whatever happens, it's going to end well. I know that, because it's too important not to."
