Ranking Top Kevin Durant Trade Packages and Landing Spots

Andy BaileyMay 2, 2026

Considering how things ended with the Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns, we shouldn't be surprised by the potential of a Kevin Durant trade this summer.

But things should not have gone this sour this fast.

KD has played just one season with the Rockets. He averaged 26.0 points with a way-above-average effective field-goal percentage. He's still, quite clearly, one of the best individual scorers in the league.

But Houston stumbled to the finish line this season. Things suddenly felt tense after Steven Adams went down with an injury (and took much of the identity as an offensive rebounding behemoth with him) and another alleged burner account for Durant surfaced.

Now, after he missed most of their first-round loss to a Los Angeles Lakers team without Luka Dončić for the entire series and Austin Reaves for most of it, the possibility of another Durant trade is unavoidable.

But even with the growing list of uncomfortable exits, there are a handful of teams that could justify bringing on the all-time great for his age-38 campaign. Trade packages to get him to those spots, sorted by what would be best for KD's career, can be found below.

4. Heat Go Star Hunting

1 of 4
Miami Heat v Houston Rockets

Heat Receive: Kevin Durant

Rockets Receive: Tyler Herro and Nikola Jović

Durant may be in the twilight of his career, but he obviously still has the name value of a star and generally plays like one too.

He's undoubtedly more consistent (and lately, more available) than Tyler Herro. And inside-out actions with he and Bam Adebayo could give the Miami Heat a more dynamic attack than they've had in years.

Herro would give the Rockets another young(ish) guard and tough shotmaker to play in the backcourt with Reed Sheppard and/or Fred VanVleet. He's averaged at least 20 points, five assists and two triples in each of the last five years.

And, at least in theory, Nikola Jović would make sense as a floor-spacing 4 flanking Şengün's work in the middle of the floor. He seemed to fall out of favor with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and shot 26.9 percent from deep this season, but Jović hit 38.3 percent of his long-range attempts over the two previous seasons.

3. Magic Address Their Offense

2 of 4
Detroit Pistons v Orlando Magic - Game Six

Magic Receive: Kevin Durant and a 2029 first-round pick (via Phoenix)

Rockets Receive: Paolo Banchero and Jase Richardson

We're going on four straight seasons in which Paolo Banchero has been one of the least efficient scorers in the NBA. And in case you weren't keeping count, this was his fourth season in the NBA.

His struggles getting the ball in the basket have had a real impact on Orlando's bottom line, too. This season, the Magic were 18th in points per 100 possessions. And their point differential has been worse when Banchero's on the floor in each of his four campaigns.

The difference between his offensive consistency and Durant's would be stark. And the attention KD would command outside would in turn open things up a bit for Franz Wagner's slashing.

Of course, this isn't a no-brainer for Orlando. Banchero is 14 years younger than Durant, and he checks a lot of boxes outside the scoring column. At his size (6'10"), Banchero's playmaking ability is unique. And when he's locked in, he can be a difference-making defender.

The shooting concerns are very real, but swapping Paolo in for KD would instantly put Houston back in the "most interesting young cores" conversation.

2. Pistons Add a Go-To Scorer

3 of 4
Houston Rockets v Detroit Pistons

Pistons Receive: Kevin Durant

Rockets Receive: Duncan Robinson, Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert

If the top-seeded Detroit Pistons flame out of the postseason earlier than expected, they could be looking for an upgrade at Tobias Harris' spot.

The veteran forward is a free agent this summer, and Durant could easily make up for his 13.3 points, while also being a more consistent catch-and-shoot threat for Cade Cunningham to spray out to.

The potential for stylistic or off-court clashes wouldn't be as great in Detroit either. There's no question whose team this is. And no one would expect Durant to take that mantle from Cunningham.

This particular framework has Detroit giving up a lot of depth to get a player near the end of his career, but a top three of Cunningham, Durant and Jalen Duren would fit together well and be one of the East's most talented trios.

For the Rockets, this gives them a lights-out shooter in Duncan Robinson who could pull defenders away from Alperen Şengün's post-ups, a big man in Isaiah Stewart who could replace a lot of Adams' physicality and a potential wildcard-off-the-bench scorer in Caris LeVert.

1. Nuggets Get Desperate

4 of 4
Houston Rockets v Denver Nuggets

Rockets Receive: Cameron Johnson, Christian Braun and a 2031 first-round pick swap

Nuggets Receive: Kevin Durant

With their Game 6 loss to a Minnesota Timberwolves team down Anthony Edwards, Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu, the Denver Nuggets sealed their status as one of 2025-26's most disappointing teams.

And after three straight early exits from the playoffs, it may be time to seriously consider moves as drastic as trading Jamal Murray or Aaron Gordon.

But the ability to attach a far-flung first-round pick swap to Cameron Johnson and Christian Braun could give them one more shot at contention with the Nikola Jokić-Murray-Gordon core.

The offensive potential of lineups with those three and Durant would be off the charts. Durant would be a terrifying catch-and-shoot option for Jokić. And his ability to get his own baskets would take a lot of pressure off Jokić and Murray as playmakers.

For the Rockets, it'll be tough to get many teams to surrender real draft assets for a soon-to-be-38-year-old who's struggled to fit in on four different teams now, but the Nuggets may be desperate enough to do just that. And by the time that pick swap conveys, Durant will likely be retired and Jokić will be 36. That could turn into a great asset.

This deal also gives Houston two solid, multipositional wings who would fit well with the other forwards in the Rockets' core.

Johnson obviously doesn't provide the scoring volume Durant does, but he shot 43.0 percent from deep this season.

And while Christian Braun's five-year, $125 million contract looks pretty onerous after his down year, he's still just 25 years old and was one of the league's most dangerous transition weapons in 2024-25.
