Alberto Mendoza, Fernando's Brother, Tabbed as 'The Guy' in Georgia Tech HC Amid QB Battle

The brother of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza has opened a lead in the race to win Georgia Tech's starting quarterback job.

Following the Yellow Jackets' spring game, coach Brent Key confirmed Alberto Mendoza is sitting atop the depth chart for now.

"I can't predict the future, but if we started a game today, he would be the guy," Key told reporters. "It is pretty simple."

The coach was a little less declarative when being interviewed on the Georgia Tech radio network during the game.

"Obviously, he still has to compete and still has to win the job, but he's done nothing to disappoint me and think that's not going to be the case," he said of Mendoza (via ESPN.com).

Mendoza originally signed with Indiana out of high school before his brother joined him in Bloomington for the 2025 season. He entered the portal after the Hoosiers added former TCU QB Josh Hoover.

Mendoza could see the writing on the wall. He has thrown 25 total passes in college, while Hoover appeared in 35 games over the past three years.

Indiana is looking to defend a national championship, so a quarterback with Hoover's experience is at a clear advantage in any positional battle.

With three-year starter Haynes King graduating, Georgia Tech presented Mendoza with a clearer path to a starting role. He's making the most of the opportunity.
