Kamden Lopati Commits to Michigan After Flip from Illinois, Full Scouting Report on 4-Star QB

Zach BacharApr 14, 2026

4-star quarterback prospect Kamden Lopati committed to Michigan on Tuesday, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.com.

Lopati initially committed to Illinois in July 2025, but decommitted from the school on Monday.

He's listed as the No. 9 quarterback and No. 122 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins discussed Lopati's pocket awareness in his scouting report.

"Will hit his first read and keep an offense on schedule, but tends to make some of his best tosses when working off-script as he constantly extends plays with his short-area quickness and pocket awareness," Ivins wrote.

The Wolverines were far from the only school interested in adding him before he flipped from Illinois, as ESPN's Eli Lederman reported that Notre Dame, Cal and Duke were also pursuing him.

Still, his recent visit to Ann Arbor as well as his relationships with Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. swayed his final decision.

"Yes, there has been a consistent line of communication with the new coaching staff," Lopati said, via SI.com's Trent Knoop. "Once coach Beck and coach Detmer made a home visit, things really picked up. Coach Beck and coach Detmer have been super involved with me and my parents and made an effort to get to know me as a player and as a person. I really appreciate how they've stayed in touch, and I've had some great conversations with them. They're definitely a staff I respect a lot."

Lopati was listed at 6'3" and 225 pounds prior to his senior year at West High School in Utah (h/t Ivins).

During the 2025 season, he completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 2,671 yards and 34 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions. Lopati also rushed for 730 yards and 10 scores.

He should provide a boost to a Michigan recruiting class that ranked No. 29 among all schools during the 2027 cycle prior to his decision (via 247Sports).

In the meantime, the Wolverines will look to build upon their 9-4 finish in 2025 under new head coach Kyle Whittingham.
