5-Star EDGE Anthony Sweeney Reveals CFB Commitment Between Texas Tech, LSU, South Carolina
Texas Tech landed a commitment from one of the top recruits in the class of 2027 on Monday.
Edge rusher Anthony Sweeney told Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.com that he is committing to the Red Raiders over offers from LSU and South Carolina. Sweeney is a 5-star prospect and the No. 3 edge rusher in the 2027 class in 247Sports' composite.
"Coach McGuire has established and built a championship culture, and his staff is elite," Sweeney told Rivals.com's Steve Wiltfong after a recent visit to Texas Tech. "Over the last five months, I've developed a real relationships with Coach (Jacquies) Smith and GM Mr. Blanchard, and I can see why Texas Tech will soon be competing for a National Championship."
Per 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins, Sweeney finished his junior season in 2025 with 34 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 11 games on his way to earning an invite to the Under Armour All-America Game as an underclassman.
Ivins described Sweeney as a "long-levered edge defender with some natural twitch that can dip and build speed as he turns the corner," and he added that he "should be viewed as a potential game-wrecker at the Power Four level that could fit into a variety of different schemes."
Sweeney is the latest addition to a Texas Tech 2027 recruiting class that also includes 5-star athlete Jalen Brewster, who is ranked as the No. 1 player at his position and the No. 6 overall player in the nation. He will certainly be ready to make an impact when he arrives on campus next year.
